From pick-up games on the blacktop to top-tier matchups where NBA titles are on the line, it’s been proven time and again that offense wins games, but defense wins championships. Though it’s entertaining to watch sharpshooters light up the scoreboard or spectacular plays from all-stars, every competition comes down to who holds their opponent to fewer points. While only five are allowed on the floor at a time, it takes the effort of each teammate to establish a solid defensive unit.
Here a three simple tips for winning on the defensive side of the ball:
Use Your Feet
Footwork is effective for more than dance parties or slashing to the basket. When you are quick on your feet and blend that with the perfect mix of low balance, fluid change of direction, and staying light on your toes, you can close gaps, expose weaknesses and remain in front of the offensive player to disrupt their route to the hoop. Invest in mastering the use of your feet to dictate the movement of your opponent and soon you’ll find yourself a few steps ahead.
Trust Your Instincts
Textbook technique and all-star athleticism go a long way, but the “intangibles” are what fuel great defenders and make them the most pivotal and trusted players for causing turnovers or stops that shift the momentum of a game. While studying opposing offenses, making sure you are physically prepared and focusing on the fundamentals, trust your gut when it comes to in-game decisions and boldly take chances that play to your advantage. Doing so will help develop the confidence necessary to successfully defend the floor.
Narrow Your Focus
In the heat of the game, stakes are high and there’s always a list of potential distractions that can damage your defensive approach. Whether its crowd noise, stopping the star opponent or thinking too much about what your teammates should be doing, the key to covering your zone or man with precision is staying focused on your role. Silence the noise, honor your defensive focal points and signals, and commit to being the best defender you can be. Not only does that focus strengthen the trust of your teammates, but over time it will strengthen the entire unit.
